Phrasal verbs with ‘up’

Rob explains how to understand phrasal verbs with the preposition ‘up’. The secret to understanding phrasal verbs is understanding the prepositions. In this video we look at the phrasal verbs:

  • Cheer up – to increase your level of happiness
    • She was in hospital so I sent her some flowers to cheer her up.
  • Bring up – Help a child to develop (usually passive voice)
    • I was brought up by my mother and father.’
  • Grow up – to change from a young child to an older person (active voice)
    • I grew up in a small village in Wicklow.
  • Put up – To increase the price of something.
    • Dublin Bus put up their prices.
  • Back up – to back up a point / to back someone up in an argument – To support them and strengthen them
    • In my presentation, I had lots of statistics to back up my points
  • Do up – to make a house or room look better. To decorate
    • We bought some paint and a few things in Ikea to do up our sitting room.”
